Like many other franchises, the name was chosen after a contest where people suggested different names. The Miami Herald newspaper was in charge of organizing the poll.
More than 19,000 people participated in the election. Mariners, Marauders, Mustangs, Missiles, Moons, Sharks, Suns were among the most voted names. But it was the Dolphins who got the most votes with 622.
And so it was that Miami christened its football team on October 8, 1965. In his presentation, owner Robbie Robbie tried to show the fiercest face of the Dolphins with these words.
“Dolphins are one of the fastest and most intelligent animals in the sea, capable of attacking and killing a shark or a whale. Also, among sailors, it is feared, and they say that you will have bad luck if you hurt one of them.”
The Miami Dolphins originally started playing at the Orange Bowl Stadium. Located about 15 miles from downtown Miami, it is also the University of Miami Huracans.
In 1986 they moved to Joe Robbie Stadium, later renamed Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, LandShark Stadium, Sun Life Stadium, New Miami Stadium, and Hard Rock in August 2016 Stadium.
Miami Stadium has hosted five super bowls. Being located in Florida, a state near the tropics, and pleasant temperatures in February made it an ideal stadium.
The construction of indoor stadiums has made the competition to host the Superbowl tougher. For that reason, in 2016-17, a significant remodeling of the stadium, which had become very outdated, was carried out. The Hard Rock Stadium will host the LIV Super Bowl in 2020.
Without a doubt, the man who changed everything in Miami was Don Shula in 1970. The early years of the franchise were terrible.
Shula imposed a hard-nosed approach to coaching that paid off from the start, leading the Dolphins to the playoffs for the first time in their history in his first season in Miami.
In 1971 the Dolphins reached their first Superbowl, after a splendid season, but were defeated by the Dallas Cowboys (24-3).
The goal in 1972 was to get the ring, and the Dolphins set out from the beginning to achieve a perfect season, winning all the regular league playoff games and the Superbowl, becoming the first and only team to achieve a “perfect season” in the NFL.
The Chicago Bears achieved the first perfect seasons in 1934 and 1942 but fell in the finals.
The 1972 team was led by QBs Earl Morrall and Bob Griese (the starter but injured midway through that season).
In addition to a fearsome offense with Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, and Mercury Morris (Csonka and Morris were the first RB’s to gain over 1000 yards in the same season for the same team).
Their defense was also the best that season and is known as the “non name defensemen” because the Dolphins’ devastating offense overshadowed them. In 1973 the Miami Dolphins won their second Super Bowl.
