We shouldn’t need a special day to celebrate our giant old planet Earth. However, it’s still nice to have a day to take a moment and think about how to leave it clean and healthy for posterity.
International Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 since 1970. Earth Day is the date established to recognize the planet as our home and create an everyday awareness of the problems that affect it.
It was the largest civic event on the planet and forced governments to take concrete action, including passing environmental laws and establishing dedicated ecological agencies.
In addition to these concrete results, the event demonstrated how much can be achieved when people unite and demand action,” the United Nations said of the April 22, 1970 demonstrations, which in their entirety involved more than one billion people in 180 countries around the world.
Environmental issues became a prevailing discourse that impacted the political, cultural, and social spheres from that moment.
The actions derived from the mega movement evolved until 2008 when the UN declared 2008 the International Year of the Earth and, subsequently, April 22 as the International Mother Earth Day.
