Boston Red Sox is a baseball team residing in Boston (Massachusetts). It was founded in 1901. In 2021 the team will celebrate 120 years of its sports career.

These days the club competes in the American League East division. Initially, the team took the name “Boston Americans”. After the 1907 season, team owner John Taylor decided to change it to “Red Sox”.

Since 1912, Fenway Park, located in Boston, has been the home stadium of the Red Sox. It is the oldest ballpark that hosts players in Major League Baseball.

It can accommodate at least 40,000 fans. Fenway Park has become highly famous for the Green Monster, an eleven-foot-tall left-field wall.

A new training facility for the Red Sox is currently under construction. Officials announced that it would be called Jet Blue Park. Many of the architectural and technological features of the new stadium would be taken from Fenway Park, including the Green Monster.

U.S. citizens know that the Boston Red Sox is a great baseball underdog and the most legendary franchise. The club’s name is associated with billions of anecdotes, jokes, superstitions, and legends.

The misfortunes began in 1919. Before then, the Red Sox had undoubtedly been one of the most successful teams, winning the World Series in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918.

However, in 1919, severe financial problems forced club owners to sell Babe Ruth, their biggest star and one of the most important baseball players ever. He was traded to the New York Yankees, Boston’s fiercest rivals.

The infamous sale of Babe Ruth drastically changed the team’s fortunes and led to the superstition known as the Curse of the Bambino (Bambino was one of Ruth’s nicknames).

After acquiring him, the New York Yankees achieved much success: they won 26 world championships and 39 American League pennants, both world records.

The Red Sox followed 86 years in which the team could not win any World Series. The team reached the World Series in 1946, 1967, 1975 and 1986, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals (2 times), Cincinnati Reds, and New York. The Boston Red Sox’s consistent loss in decisive games became a heated topic of numerous jokes.

In 2004, the Curse of the Bambino was broken. The club was no longer a lovable underdog since it played like the envied champion.

The Red Sox won a successful AL Series season against the New York Yankees and took on the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. In 2007, the Red Sox became world champions again, sweeping the Colorado Rockies in four games.

After winning the 2013 American League pennant, the Red Sox were given to play in the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Bostonians won the World Series four games to two.

On October 28, 2018, the team beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth game to win their ninth World Series title, the deciding series in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Famed horror writer Stephen King is an incredibly loyal fan of the franchise. He routinely attends the team’s home and away games and occasionally mentions them in his many novels.
