The San Diego Padres, a franchise created in 1969, are the Los Angeles Angels, the only two Major League Baseball teams originating in California – the Athletics originated in Philadelphia, the Dodgers originated in Brooklyn, and the Giants were born in New York.

The Padres team was born during Major League Baseball’s expansion in the late 1960s and the Montreal Expos, Kansas City Royals, and Seattle Pilots (now Milwaukee Brewers).

Businessman Arnholt Smith -the original owner of the franchise- and his team took the name from a Pacific Coast League franchise of the 1930s.

The name “Padres” refers to the Franciscan friars who founded the city of San Diego in 1769. They chose to leave the name in Spanish in honor of the deep Mexican and Spanish influence in the southwestern United States region.

The Padres have been National League champions twice (1984 and 1998) but failed on both occasions to win the World Series.

In 1996, the Padres began the custom of holding an annual military appreciation event, which since 2000 they have done by wearing a camouflage uniform, a custom later adopted by several MLB teams.

From the team’s foundation until now, it has had eleven logos. It all started in 1969 with a photo of a father hitting a baseball with a cue.

Besides that, other images came up and became part of the company’s visual identity. This was generally the version using the word “Padres”.

After undergoing multiple transformations, the emblem received a monogram, consisting of the initial letters of the first half of the name – “San Diego”.

This option appeared for the first time in 2012 when the interlocking abbreviation was included in the logo in the form of an imprint. A few years later, its minimalist form was adopted – in the intersection of “S” and “D”.

In terms of the color component of the logo, everything is simple: in the current version prevails the brown (monogram) and white (background). Yellow (another official team color) is only present in the first emblem.
