They entered the NBA along with Seattle SuperSonics in the expansion draft of the 1967-1968 season. Their name in Spanish means Houston Rockets.
The “Rockets” nickname was given because the city of San Diego called itself a city on the move. Their first pick in the 1967 NBA Draft was Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Pat Riley, with the seventh pick.
In their first season, they lost 67 games, then a record number of losses in NBA history, winning only 15 games, but after picking in the 1968 Draft, they made their first playoff appearance that same season.
The first four years, they played in San Diego, California. As head coach Moses Malone, who won two NBA MVP awards during his time in Houston, led the Rockets to their first playoff appearance in 1981, where they lost in six games to the Boston Celtics.
In 1993 several teams fought to take the vacant place left by the Bulls, and in a thrilling final, the Rockets of MVP Hakeem Olajuwon won the Championship against the New York Knicks by a tight 4-3.
That year the Houston Rockets were one of the strong contenders for the ring after finishing the regular season with a 58-24 record and only behind the Supersonics in the Western Conference and the NBA.
The following year, the Houston Rockets kept the team’s structure that had made them Champions the previous year and incorporated in the middle of the year an old acquaintance of Hakeem Olajuwon’s Phi Slama Jama from the University of Houston.
Rudy Tomjanovich still coached the team, but that season wasn’t working for the Rockets like the year before.
The Rockets qualified for the Playoffs in sixth place in the Western Conference and third in the Midwest division.
Other teams such as the Supersonics, Spurs, Jazz, and Suns were again the favorites in the West and the East the Magic, Knicks, and Pacers, but again, something changed when the Playoffs arrived and when it came to the crunch time, the Rockets began to struggle.
In the first round, they got rid of the Utah Jazz of Malone, Stockton, and Hornacek by a tight 3 to 2 in the series and won a 2 to 1 against them.
In the semifinals, they met the Suns of Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson and beat them by another tight 4 to 3 and after overcoming a 3 to 1 series deficit and winning the last game by one point in Phoenix.
In the conference finals, the Spurs of MVP David Robinson were waiting for them, and they defeated them 4-2 to become Western Conference Champions.
The Rockets had managed to win all their conference series against teams with a better balance and therefore had the home court factor in their favor.
They faced the best team in the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals, the Orlando Magic of Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway.
Against all odds, they swept the young Magic by a sweeping 4-0, becoming NBA Champions for the second consecutive year and leaving for history being the lowest-ranked team for the Playoffs (6th) that became the winner of the NBA Title.
