Organized in 1946, with its 17 championships, it is the most celebrated team in NBA history, dominating the NBA from 1959 to 1966 with eight consecutive rings.
In the 70’s they won two more titles, and in the ’80s, with Larry Bird at the helm, they would win three titles, also disputing three Finals against their traditional rivals Los Angeles Lakers that remain to this day, with the 2010 NBA Finals between the two franchises.
In addition to their 17 championships, they have 27 division titles and 21 conference titles.
The Celtics are the winningest franchise in NBA history. Thanks to Bill Russell’s role, they won eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966.
In the 1980s, led by Larry Bird, there was an intense rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers, with Magic Johnson as the headliner, which would mark the beginning of the NBA as a worldwide spectacle.
Boston and New York Knicks are the only two founding NBA teams that remain in the same city.
Their first season was in 1946-1947, with a record of 22 wins out of 38 and a season-ending ranking in the last positions of the East division.
Despite the economic difficulties that affected several teams, the following year would mean a sporting improvement. The team would qualify for the playoffs but would be eliminated by the Chicago Stags in the quarterfinals.
In the 1948-1949 season, the Celtics would fail again to reach the playoffs. And the experience would be repeated once again in the 1949-1950 season. It is the year of the birth of the NBA and the incorporation of this team into the league. The first coach was John Russell.
In the 1958-1959 season, the team would open a string of eight consecutive championships led by Russell.
In the last two seasons of the decade, the team’s weight would be shared by Russell, Cowens, Sharman, Heinsohn, Ramsey, and an emerging Sam Jones, chosen in the 1957 Draft.
