The team is nicknamed the Red Devils because of its red jerseys. In December 2000, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) awarded Al-Ahly the title of African club of the century.
Al-Ahly was founded in 1907 as a sports club for Egyptian high school students. British troops occupied Egypt and an Englishman, Mitchel Ince, was the club’s first president.
The club participated in local and regional competitions, including the Sultan Hussein Cup, contested from 1917 to 1938. Al-Ahly won that competition seven times.
Al Ahly has a record of 42 national land titles, 37 national cup titles, and 11 national Supercup titles, making them the most decorated club in Egypt. Moreover, Al Ahly has never been relegated to the Egyptian Second Division.
Alfred Mitchell-Innes first led the club, then a British advisor to the Treasury, to provide financial support. An official meeting of the club’s committee was held on April 24, 1907.
The committee met at 5:30 p.m. at Mitchell-Innes’ house in Giza under his chairmanship and the members of Idris Ragheb Bey, Ismael Seri Pasha, Amin Sami Pasha, Omar Lotfi Bek, and Mohamed Effendi Sherif as secretary.
