Facts About Lizard

There are about 1500 different species of lizards: this category of reptiles belongs to the Squamata order. In general, they have a common morphological aspect: flat and triangular head, flat trunk, and long tail.

They equipped with four legs, although they have legs not as apparent as the orbit or tiny as the Luscengola and external ears as the Saurians.

The eyes are big and black, with the yellow iris and a forked tongue with a double function: both for tasting and for seizing the prey.

As it is easy to imagine, these are carnivorous reptiles, but the least visible thing is that they use their tongues to catch their prey.

Their forked tongue acts as an organ of touch, but it also works as a hunting weapon—the tongue help of saliva that holds the prey in the mouth like glue.

His favorite meal is insects, fly larvae, earthworms, and worms. A reliable pair of jaws and two perfectly symmetrical rows of teeth make the grip even stronger.

But even though they are carnivorous, they do not disdain vegetarian food: they go crazy for very sugary fruit, i.e., apples, strawberries, and blackberries.

If you have decided to adopt a lizard as a pet, it is good to know that you will have to provide them with fresh prey, to keep their predatory instincts intact.

When do you reproduce this particular reptile? Usually, they choose the first heat, as this species loves high temperatures: therefore, it is just in this period that the females lay their eggs.

The lizard lays from 3 to 8 eggs, small and whitish, with a softer shell than that of the birds. The eggs are laid in some furrows dug by the same ‘mothers’ in the ground.

They help with their legs to make basins in the whole of gardens and wild places. The front legs dig, and the first ones move the earth backward.

Once they are ready to come out, the small reptiles open their eggs using a sort of rigid tip, called the ‘horny awl or egg tooth’, which is reabsorbed when the lizard is adult.
