The book of Genesis tells the story of Adam and Eve. In the first chapter it is written how God made man in his own image and likeness. He created them as man and woman, thus equal.
Therefore Jews and Christians believe that God is both male and female. Then in the second chapter of Genesis there is more information about the creation of Adam and Eve. According to the Bible, Adam was created by God from dust. Eve was then made from a rib of Adam.
Adam and Eve then lived in paradise (the garden of Eden). Eve was seduced by the serpent (according to later Christian ideas this was the devil) to pick a piece of fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. She tempted Adam to eat as well.
When they ate they saw that they were naked and were ashamed of it. After all, they had something to hide from God. God sent them for punishment from Paradise, as a place where God can always be experienced.
The story of Adam and Eve is one of the most famous stories from the Bible because it belongs to the story of creation. The story is in the Old Testament, in Jewish language called the TeNaCh.
Because Adam and Eve ate the fruit of good and evil, death came into the world. We are all going to die, but here we also mean spiritual death. We do not feel much of God and we feel far too little of each other.
The serpent, or devil, stands for the devious thoughts that shoot through our heads and keep us away from things that are good. Because of this, people are sometimes a bit selfish in the eyes of Jews and Christians.
