The film tells about emotions that come to life inside the brain of a maturing girl who suddenly faces a series of changes. The little girl will go through different moods in her day-to-day life.
It tells the story of young Riley Anderson when, at only 11 years old, she has to leave behind her life in the Midwest and move to San Francisco.
Like everyone else, Riley’s life is guided by her emotions: joy, fear, anger, disgust, and Sadness.
All of them live in the HQ, the control center inside her head from where they help and direct the girl’s behaviors in her day-to-day life.
Although Alegria tries to dominate the feelings to keep the girl in a state of happiness, Tristeza begins to change things and make the low spread.
A series of events causes the two emotions to accidentally leave HQ and travel through Riley’s mind as they try to find their way back.
Riley is born in Minnesota, and in his mind, five of his emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Dislike, and Anger) live. As Riley grows up, emotions are added, joy being the first and fury being the last emotion to join.
When Riley is eleven, her family moves to San Francisco after her father gets a new job. On Riley’s first day at her new school, Sadness accidentally makes her cry in front of her class, prompting the creation of a new Central Thought, the Sad Core memory.
Joy tries to dispose of the New Central Thought before it reaches the central axis but accidentally hits the loose Central Thoughts in her struggle with Sadness, causing the personality islands to close.
Joy and Sadness meet Bing Bong, Riley’s imaginary friend who is desperate to reconnect with her. He tells them that they can reach HQ by traveling by train of thought.
After exploring the different islands of Riley’s mind, the three finally enter the train, but it is derailed when another island of personality falls off.
As her parents accept what Riley says, they embrace and reassure her that joy and sadness create a new central thought that makes a unique personality island.
A year later, Riley has adapted to her new home. Her emotions are working together, using an expanded control console to help her lead a happy life, with unique personality islands produced by new core thoughts combinations of multiple emotions.
