The Deinonychus is a theropod dinosaur that inhabited the earth in the middle of the Cretaceous period about 119 million years ago.

Its name means “terrible claw” because they had a sickle-shaped claw on their hind legs with which they slit the throats of their prey.

The Deinonychus were classified as dromaeosaurids and therefore possessed typical characteristics of this genus. Its members kept elongated legs which served them to reach speeds of around 50 kilometers per hour.

Its hind legs had a retractable claw of approximately 12 centimeters with which they wounded their prey. In contrast, its front legs had three sharp claws, with an elongated tail that maintained a rigid form.

The Deinonychus oscillated between approximately 90 kilograms with about three and a half meters in height.

As for its skull, it was elongated, although compared to other dromaeosaurids, it was smaller.

It is believed that the skin of the Deinonychus was covered with feathers, although there is still no consensus in the scientific community on this theory.

Regarding their reproduction, it was with oviparous internal fertilization. Deinonychus was a predator that has hunted its prey in groups and a coordinated manner.

Studies on its behavior indicate an intelligent dinosaur with good vision, agility, and speed. Among its prey were: Tenontosaurus, Iguanodon, Zephyrosaurus, and other small prey.

Most of the remains of Deinonychus have been found in the Cloverly Formation between Montana and Wyoming and in the Antlers Formation located in Oklahoma.
